Things to do in Luton

Parks, museums, live arts, chalk hills and a famous carnival - the best of Luton for a weekend, a day off or visiting family.

Wardown Park and Wardown House

Wardown Park is a Grade II listed park a short walk north of the town centre, with a boating lake, sports pitches, play areas and restored heritage features. At its heart is Wardown House, a Victorian mansion that is now the town's museum and gallery, with period rooms, local history and the hat collection. Opening days are limited, so check before you go.

Stockwood Park and Discovery Centre

On the south side of town, Stockwood Park was part of the Crawley family estate from 1708 and became public parkland in 1945. Today it has open grassland, sports facilities and Stockwood Discovery Centre, where period gardens sit alongside displays on local rural life and a collection of carriages.

Walk the chalk hills

Galley and Warden Hills, on the northern edge of Luton, was the town's first nature reserve and is a nationally protected Site of Special Scientific Interest. The chalk grassland is covered in wild flowers in summer and supports more than 20 kinds of butterfly, and the views back over the town are worth the climb.

Arts, music and the carnival

The Hat Factory Arts Centre on Bute Street runs a year-round programme of gigs, comedy, dance and family shows, and The Culture Trust lists what is on across its venues. Each spring, Luton International Carnival fills the streets with costume, music and dance, organised from the UK Centre for Carnival Arts. Dates change each year, so check the official page.

Gardens just outside town

The Walled Garden on the Luton Hoo Estate, laid out by Capability Brown in the late 1760s, opens to visitors on set days through the warmer months and is a peaceful contrast to the town centre. Volunteers have spent years bringing the old glasshouses and growing beds back to life, and there is usually something new to see from one season to the next.

Closer to home, smaller green spaces such as People's Park and the open hilltops around Bradgers Hill are good for a quick walk, and Luton's leisure centres, swimming pools and sports clubs keep families busy when the weather turns. Our Community & Leisure listings are a good place to find local clubs, classes and venues for hire.
