Luton community contacts, council services and libraries

Who to contact in Luton for council services, your local councillor, libraries, health, police and fire - with links to the official sites.

One council for the whole town

Luton Borough Council is a unitary authority, so it handles nearly all local services in one place - bins and recycling, council tax, roads and street lighting, planning, schools admissions, housing, parks and libraries. The council's website is the quickest way to report a problem or check a service.

If you live just over the boundary in Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Caddington or Barton-le-Clay, your services come from Central Bedfordshire Council instead.

Bins and your local councillor

You can check your bin collection day, order replacement bins and report a missed collection online. Luton is divided into wards represented by 48 elected councillors; the council's councillor finder shows who represents your street and how to contact them about local issues.

Libraries and community spaces

Luton's libraries offer free membership, computers, study space and events. Central Library is on St George's Square, with branch libraries across town including Leagrave and Lewsey, and a home library service for residents who cannot get out. Many community centres, places of worship and sports clubs also host groups and classes - browse the Community & Leisure section to find them.

Voluntary groups and getting involved

Luton has a strong voluntary and faith sector, from food banks and youth projects to friends-of-the-park groups, residents' associations and conservation volunteers on the chalk hills. If you run a club, charity or community group, you can add it to this directory for free so neighbours can find you, and the council's website lists ways to organise a community event safely.

Health, police and fire

The Luton and Dunstable University Hospital is run by Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Policing is provided by Bedfordshire Police and fire cover by Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

For a GP, dentist or pharmacy near you, use the NHS website's service finder, or browse the Health & Beauty section of this directory for local pharmacies, dentists and opticians.

In an emergency always call 999. For non-emergency police matters call 101, and for urgent medical advice that is not an emergency use NHS 111.
