The town centre
Most visitors start at Frasers Plus Luton, the covered shopping centre previously called Luton Point and The Mall, home to national chains and easy to reach from Luton station and the main bus routes. It connects through to George Street, the pedestrianised high street that runs down towards St George's Square and the Town Hall.
Halfway along George Street, Market Hill is a brick-paved amphitheatre that the council uses for events and seasonal markets, and a handy place to pause between shops.
Luton Indoor Market
Luton Indoor Market brings together independent traders under one roof - food, fabrics, phones, clothing, key cutting and repairs, plus places to grab something to eat. Trader line-ups change, so the market's own website is the best place to see who is there now.
Bury Park and the local high streets
A short walk west of the centre, Dunstable Road through Bury Park is one of Luton's liveliest shopping streets, known for its grocers, sweet centres, fabric and bridal shops, jewellers and restaurants. Further out, neighbourhood parades in Stopsley, Leagrave, Round Green and Wigmore keep everyday shopping close to home.
The Hat District
Around Bute Street, Guildford Street and the station, the old hat-making quarter mixes creative studios, cafes and independent businesses in converted factory buildings. Pair a browse with a show or exhibition at the Hat Factory Arts Centre.
It is also worth looking out for Luton's remaining milliners and hat suppliers - a direct link to the trade that built the town - along with barbers, tailors and alteration shops that keep the town's long tradition of making and mending going.
Plan your trip
Seasonal events often bring extra stalls and street food into the centre, particularly around Christmas and the town's big celebrations, so it is worth checking the council and BID websites before a weekend visit.
Luton station is a few minutes' walk from the shopping centre, and the council runs several town centre car parks. Opening hours and parking charges change, so check before you travel, and use this directory to find local shops, cafes and services by area.
